Stocktonians second in friendly against Barnard Castle "3rds"

Hartlepool 2nds certainly opened the livelier of the two sides at Grangefield today, and took the lead with a penalty after ten minutes.

Eventually our Saracens won a bit of possession and, after a kick ahead, No. 8 Devon Douthwaite picked up a loose ball near the try line and galloped over unmolested . With Ben Costello converting Stockton were now leading 7-3. Openside flanker Liam Ryder then showed an astonishing burst of speed to scythe through the Hartlepool defence for our second try and again Costello added the extras to make it 14-3.

Right winger Ben Costello then gathered a neat chip ahead and raced beneath the posts to make his own conversion easier and it was now 21-3.

Skipper and left winger Simon Crozier was not to be undone and he raced fully 60 metres for his try and again Costello converted . Then just before half time Devon Douthwaite powered over again and Costello kept up his 100% success rate so it was 35-3 at the break

Now playing into the breeze Saracens were awarded a penalty try when there was a shove on a potential scorer by a desperate Hartlepool defender : 42-3 as conversions don't have to be taken for penalty tries.

Ben Costello kept the scoresheet ticking over to 49-3 with a try which converted himself ,and then flanker Sean Jones ran fully 50 metres for a try and appeared so tired by the end that he couldn't make it under the posts -much to Costello's chagrin whose conversion missed narrowly - to take the score to 54-3 .

Teenage Lock Joe Atkinson then crashed over, a fitting reward for an outstanding display with a conversion from Costello. The final two tries came from " Little Legs" himself as Simon showed he had lots none of his pace to complete his hat trick and with 2 Costello conversions the score was 75-3 and Hartlepool bodies were now strewn about the pitch and the touchline .

Wisely ,experienced Referee Derek English blew for full time. Hartlepool were a very game side who kept plugging away and came close to crossing the Stockton whitewash on a few occasions, but today found the Red defence too well organised and the Red attack just too hot to handle.
Next Saturday Saracens host Middlesbrough. Over the last 3 weeks Saracens have scored over 200 points and risen to top the league

Meanwhile our Stocktonians scheduled game at Northallerton had been re-arranged at their behest until 2 Nov, so a friendly against Barnard Castle 3 at Grangefield was picked up.Despite 50 odd players unavailable throughout the club , some with the usual litany of paltry excuses, coupled with a couple of " No Shows" , Nick still managed to get a squad together and even loaned the opposition a prop so live scrummaging could take place .

We even provided the Ref too as Durham county were 4 short today- so Andy Chaney took up the whistle - very impressively I might add .In fact someone remarked he was up with play as a ref far more than when he was playing prop.!

Without a 2nds game Barny were just a bit too strong , scoring 8 tries with Stocktonians' flimsy tackling being their downfall . Our five tries came from Colin Waller(2) Jack Hodgson and Nick Robinson himself, plus A.N Other - sadly no one from Stocktonians managed a conversion
