Stockton put up a good performance at top of the table Durham City

22-8 losing margin after hard fought encounter

A lively Stockton had the better of the opening quarter Hollow Drift where the pitch was surprisingly good after the heavy rain. They went close to scoring on a few occasions and eventually outside centre Jonny Horner nailed a penalty for Stockton to lead 3-0.

However after half an hour City got into the game with a well worked backs move from a scrum and led 7-3 . Skipper Charlie Doherty was yellow carded and then City rumbled over with a line out drive to lead 12-3 at half time .

Stockton were still in the game and competing hard and City were certainly not getting all their own way, but another driven line out stretched their lead to 17-3. Stockton then had tight head prop Rhys McHugh sent to the sin bin and whilst he was off they conceded a pushover try .

However Stockton deservedly had the final word in this fiesty encounter when Hooker Mark Conway drove over following a line out to make the final score when referee Gareth Foreman blew for full time Durham City 22 Stockton 8

Considering Stockton lost the home encounter 54-10 in November this shows the improvements which had led to the previous three games being won prior to today .

Next Saturday the 1sts XV are away at secondplaced Barnard Castle in a rearranged game which was postponed in December because of a frozen pitch.
