At Grangefield, Stocktonians took on yet another 2nd team of a club whose 1st team are in the same league as our 1sts:- Redcar Mariners - who had won their last three games quite comprehensively in the Tees Valley Social League .
Stocktonians took an early lead with tries through forwards Devon Douthwaite and NIck Robinson before Mariners got back into it via a couple of Stockton defensive errors to close the gap to 12-10 .
Stocktonians were also a little guilty of white line fever and a few scoring opportunities went begging before they stretched their lead to 17-10 at half time courtesy of a Jeremy Good try when he burrowed over from close in.
In the second half the Stocktonians stretched away again with tries from Nick Robinson again and Ritchie Thompson amongst others .With three Lee Keillor conversions the score was 36-15 in Stocktonians favour when the 1st team required the 2nds pitch after a neck injury curtailed play on theirs. The sides could have continued the enounter on the third pitch but with 10 minutes remaining decided that 70 mins effort was quite sufficient for a Tees Valley Social League game.
Ths was a good result for Stocktonians- despite 46 players who have already played this season being unavilable. Several younger players were to the fore and it was good to see Connor Hutchinson back on the field for the first time after his broken leg six months ago in the CANDY Vase Final. Next week Stocktonians are away at Richmondshire.
Meanwhile the Saracens were making the difficult journey to Horden and very nearly came away with a win. They scored four tries- all coverted by Steven Bartliff who infomed me that his own try was fully 95 metres. The others who crossed the white line were Danny Spears , Skipper Ben Costello and emergency ( never again!?) Hooker Josh Yellow .Full back James Burden was voted Man of the Match. It is never easy to win at Horden but the lads came close and picked up a losing bonus point and four try points for a total of five points from the encounter .Next week Saracens host Hartlepool Rovers.
Meanwhile a full 1st team report will appear courtesy of John Coates but after leading 20-7 they lost 2 props to injury, had to move pitches, revert to unopposed scrummaging and play with 14 men for 45 mimutes . At least they got a losing bonus point and we await news of Ben D'Cunha who went to hospital via ambulance with a neck injury.
