Many thanks to Sedgefield for fufilling this fixture - even though they were down to the bare bones for numbers with many of their farmers still very busy. In particular they were short of props but Andy Chaney and Anth Mulgrew started for them and later when Anth injured his ankle Jacopo did half a shift.
After 15 minutes number eight Sean Jones, looking fit after last season's shoulder injury, stormed through for 17 year old debutant fly half Will Hulyer to convert. Then full back Steve Bartliff raced over in the left hand corner and again Hulyer added the extras with a great strike. Sean Jones crossed again and with another Hulyer conversion Stockton were leading 21-0 at half time.
At half time changes were made to the Stockton squad and Stockton's 1st team skipper Charlie Doherty plus flanker Liam Healey and scrum half Jonny Horner came on to fortify a tiring Sedgefield squad. This had an immediate impact as Charlie scored two tries for Sedgefield which were converted narrowing the gap to 21-14.
Saracens' Skipper Ben Costello dotted down in the left hand corner and Will Hulyer nailed another tricky conversion to make it 28-14. In the closing moments Stu Barrass rumbled over on the right for Stockton from close range but for the only occasion on the night, Will's conversion drifted wide . With the last play of the game Sedgefield managed to cross to make the final score 33-19 just before referee Dave Swainson blew for full time.
So the Saracens avenged last season's away defeat and both sides had a meaningful work out.
