First team falter against a good Barny team

1 week ago By Terry Wilson

But a big win for Saracens plus an honorable draw for the Stocktonians

Prior to the 1st XV league game, Stockton's rapidly expanding Under 11 squad played an entertaining "Curtain Raiser" on the main pitch against a talented Darlington Mowden Park Under 11 squad.

Stockton 1st XV were slow out of the blocks at Grangefield today, conceding three first half tries to the side which finished third last season after leading for much of the campaign, and were 19-3 down at half time courtesy of a Stephen Jones penalty .

In the second half with Joe Green and Tom Nelson coming on as impact subs Stockton notched a well worked try from deep finished by skipper Charlie Doherty which Jones converted . Barnard Castle stretched away with a try from a driven line out but again Stockton responded with another Doherty try very similar to the first to make it 26- 15 .

Once again Stockton suffered picking up two yellow cards and Barnard Castle scored a final try to make the score when referee Ray Sutherland blew for full time Stockton 15 Barnard Castle 33

The Saracens wanted to put last week's disappointing second half performance at Consett last week behind them. They soon were on the scoreboard when number eight Phil Austen rumbled over . Then centre Rob Graham sliced through the Barnard Castle defence and before half time prop Dan Muirhead crashed over . With Skipper and scrum half Ben Costello converting all the Stockton led 21-0 before conceding a try to an audacious dummy from the Barny cente on the break of half time to make it 21-7.

In the second half it was one way traffic as the Saracens scored five more tries through
hooker Lewy Gray (2), fly half Paul Armstrong, Prop Josh Yellow and returning winger Dave " Shazam" Braney to make the final score 48-7 when Ref Simon Williams blew for full time.

Meanwhile the Stocktonians, playing at Ian Ramsey School were 12-0 down at half time agains the big Horden 3rds . However they fought back with 3 tries , 2 through hooker Ross Doherty( chasing burglars?) and one for 17 year old Jay Jackson playing his first game of senior rugby (and at 5ft 8'' in the second row as he is too young to play hooker) . Jeremy Good converted 2 after he made a second half appearance as a sub on his way back to match fitness

Horden scored in the closing stages but everyone agreed that 19-19 was a fair result on the day
